The review;
Arm stretched out to stop his own lightsaber blade, Kylo Ren dramatically faces off against Grandea in Chew’s direct cover. Snow whips around them in a fiery haze, lit in red by the crackling lightsaber and reminiscent of fire. Meanwhile Darboe’s variant is an amazing play on the Jedi Order symbol, with Ren’s pose completing the lightsaber encircled in golden rings as light meets dark. Finally, Sprouse’s anniversary variant focuses on Ren’s grandfather as Anakin shares a peaceful evening with Padmé in their Coruscant home.
Bored by conquest and uninspired to lead his forces, Kylo Ren seeks a greater challenge. Something worthy of his immense power. So Vaneé sends him on a quest to a snowy planet in the Mid Rim. Somewhere on Vandor there is a Jedi who escaped Order 66 and who has been in hiding ever since. But aside from a basic location and description, Vaneé will provide nothing else, and it’s up to Ren to find them.
There are very few people who can challenge or surprise Kylo Ren. He’s immensely strong and has honed his abilities to be skilled with a lightsaber as well as his Force powers. Only Rey has managed to provide any sense of challenge. So, it’s fair to say that Ren arrives to Vandor confident that he will easily outmaneuver and overpower an old Jedi. However, his confidence is misplaced, and he quickly learns that his arrogance has blinded him. Instead of finding an old Jedi who is out of practice, he finds a true challenge.
Grandea calls herself brilliant and it’s a fair description. She managed to survive Order 66 and outrun the Empire for years. And she survived solely by her own wits. After the Jedi were declared as traitors and enemies of the Empire, to help hide her identity, Grandea destroyed her lightsaber and ensured that she didn’t openly use her Force powers. All except for one. One power that was referred to by the Jedi themselves as nothing more than a trick. A mind trick.
There have been many Jedi throughout Star Wars storytelling who have focused upon mastering a single element of their powers to an extent far beyond others. It’s through intense meditation that Yoda learns from Qui Gon Jinn how to transcend into a Force ghost. And it’s how Quinlan Voss can use his empath abilities to connect to the past simply by touching an object. This is exactly what Grandea has done, and her mind tricks are the strongest we’ve ever seen.
She’s able to trick Toydarians and even the Hutts, both of which are species that are extremely resistant to Force powers. She learns to hone her craft to such an extent that she can escape the Thirteenth Sister and Ninth Sister by tricking them into thinking that they had killed her. And while Legacy of Vader #7 is a biography of Grandea’s life, it’s absolutely mind bending to read. Soule writes it in such a way that it’s hard to tell what is illusion, and what is reality. As a reader you’re left confused.
Which is exactly how Kylo Ren feels. After regaling the Supreme Leader with her impressive tale, she reasonably asks him to simply move on from Vandor and leave her in peace. Grandea is no threat, and she doesn’t want to harm Ren, though she can sense he has more malicious intentions. Their duel is dramatic though short-lived as Ren apparently cuts Grandea down. Or so he initially thinks. He quickly realises that he’s been tricked by the very powers that Grandea spoke about, leaving him shocked and angry at his own failure.
It’s an incredible moment and Legacy of Vader #7 feels very different to all of the previous issues. This is a pause in time that reflects on a Jedi who gave up on the Order to find her own path. It’s very similar to Ren’s own story of turning his back on being a Jedi and striking out to become a powerful Force user on his own. Unlike Grandea though, he’s still tormented by his past and he certainly hasn’t escaped. He’s also not fully honed his powers either, as Grandea leaves him beaten on the snowy streets of Vandor.
This reflective pause leads nicely into the Knights of Ren returning and Soule taking the story in new directions as a new character is going to challenge Kylo Ren for his position as their leader. It will be interesting to see how this character, Tava, will try to beat a formidable Force user as none of the Knights are gifted with strong powers (they’re Force sensitive at most). So how will Tava Ren try to stand against Kylo, and what tricks will she play?
