Emmy-winning composer Brandon Roberts spoke to Fanboy Nation about creating the score for the second season of Andor on Disney+, offering an insight into his process for crafting the music behind the rebellion.
As the second and final season of ‘Andor premiered on Disney+, I had the chance to speak with Emmy®-winning composer Brandon Roberts, whose work spans suspense, horror, and now the Star Wars universe. Known for his gripping scores in ‘Thanksgiving’, ‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’, ‘The Twilight Zone’, ‘A Quiet Place’, and Netflix’s ‘Fear Street’ trilogy, Roberts brings his signature tension and emotional nuance to Andor, a series lauded for its mature tone and layered storytelling.
Roberts offered insight into his process for crafting the music behind the rebellion. “When scoring intense scenes, he relies on subtle and often imperceptible elements to heighten the viewer’s experience. It’s about guiding emotion without overwhelming the moment. His approach balances restraint with impact, drawing the audience deeper into the psychological and emotional stakes of the narrative.
A welcomed challenge for Roberts is maintaining continuity across such a sprawling, long-form project. With evolving character arcs and shifting tones, consistency became a matter of both musical technique and collaboration. Staying true to the story means aligning closely with the director’s vision, while having to trust his instincts in being ready to adjust and adapt.
That collaborative spirit was evident in his close work with ‘Andor’s creative team. Roberts emphasized the importance of finding the right sound for each scene, regardless of his personal opinions about the characters or plot. It’s not about judging the character,it’s about serving the performance and the emotion of the moment.
Our conversation also touched on the challenges of working in secrecy—a necessity for any Star Wars production. “Fear is part of the process,” he admitted with a laugh. “You’re constantly walking a tightrope between creativity and confidentiality.”
Beyond the technical and emotional labor of scoring, Roberts shared a more personal connection to the franchise. Like many, he grew up with Star Wars, making it more special for him to apart of the franchise.
With ‘Andor’ season two now streaming, Roberts’ score continues to deepen the series’ powerful storytelling. His ability to shape tension and emotion without ever upstaging the drama is a testament to why he remains one of the most sought-after composers in the genre today.
Stream Andor exclusively on Disney+ now.
