Regal Robot caught my attention with their concept statues, so much so, that I brought two. They’re not easy to come by in this country, as the company only ships within the US. However, the quality and authenticity had impressed me so much, I had been willing to go to any means to get one… then two. Droopy McCool and Max Rebo sit proudly in my study and not a day goes by that I don’t admire them. I always imagine I’ve got my own little archives going on! They’re not cheap, but worth every penny. My wallet did need a bit of a break, so I consoled myself that it wouldn’t be too long till I found another one to add to the collection.
With their products being a rare find in the UK, I always keep my eye on eBay. Big mistake. When a seller listed up the Mandalorian Skull Plaque for a very good price, concept statues or not, I had to see if it was as impressive as the statues. Quickly snatching it before anyone else could, I eagerly waited for it to be delivered. When it did arrive, I was not disappointed.
As much as some of the box art for products are amazing to witness, I always like the minimalistic look of some of the older styles. Regal Robot keep to this style, and I love it. Simple, clear, no messing around. On opening the box, I found that the plaque was impressively packed with Styrofoam. The seller had warned me that a bit of this had snapped, but even so, I could see that unless this thing had a massive knock, and I mean a massive knock, that there would b no way that this could get damaged while travelling. Regal Robot know how to keep their products safe.
While boxes and packaging are something to appreciate, they are not the main focus. When taking the first layer of Styrofoam away, I could see the Mythosaur skull, and it took my breath away. I had not even got the whole plaque out and I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. The detail on it is exceptional. Quickly removing the rest of the packaging, I held the plaque in my hands and just gazed. There is a lot of weight to this, more than I had expected. The sculpt here is just incredible and I’m sure I’m going to sound like a broken record by the time this review is finished: this thing is exceptional.
I had to remind myself that the concept statues that I had so far were copies. This, while based on some actual works, is actual Regal Robot themselves (more precisely Steven Richter) sculpting it. You can see the love and care that has gone into this in every single detail. The grooves, the markings, it all creates a very life-like representation of the Mythosaur. To then have it mounted on a worn plaque that takes its likeness from Boba Fett’s shoulder pad, just makes the whole thing feel more like Star Wars.
The size of this is perfect. It is big enough to grab your attention, but not so big if you happen to have a small study like me, that it will dominate over everything else. That said, Regal Robot have released several sizes of these, a small skull, this plaque and a much larger skull. I’m really pleased to add this size to my room, as it fits perfectly with everything I have there. However, having now seen this, if the bigger skull came up for sale in the UK? I might very well get that as well! What I like about this one, is that the RRP is $99, which is very affordable compared to some of the other products (yes, I’m looking at your concept statues). That’s not to say that they aren’t worth it (they most certainly are) but for those fans who might struggle to afford a piece, this seems like a fantastic alternative. If I’m being completely honest, I’m rather surprised it’s not more costly, I think I would have been happy to pay more. To add just the little finishing touch to the piece, there is a thank you note from Regal Robot. It is such a small thing for companies to do but it does make a huge difference.
What more can I really say? I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by the concept statues from Regal Robot – but there is a lot of nostalgia and film history there. A plaque of a skull? While I knew the quality should be there, I didn’t expect it to be as high as it is here. Honestly, I think I’d put this on the same level of the statues for my sheer amazement of it. This is a piece that fans of Boba Fett or The Mandalorian will love. The lower price point, the fact that it isn’t too big yet still draws your eye, makes this a superb piece to add to your collection. If you want something bigger – or smaller – Regal Robot, have you covered. At the time of writing, Regal Robot still have a few of these still in stock and I would heartily recommend you get one before they sell out!
